Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something activating and you become starving," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
